Your First Wax: Tips, Tricks, and Trade Secrets

You’re thinking about getting your first wax, and we understand why! The benefits of waxing are unmistakable: smooth and healthy skin, reduced irritation, and thinner and finer hair (just to name a few!). We had our experts weigh in to walk you through your first wax, from booking the appointment to fool-proof aftercare.

1. Take a look at your calendar.

If you are planning a wax before vacation, schedule it a bit early.  You want to make sure you aren’t exposed to the sun too much for 24 hours before or after to minimize irritation or sunburn. You also may be more comfortable if you wax first thing in the morning, before your skin gets clammy.

And for women, the best time to get waxed is in the week after your menstrual cycle, when your pain threshold is the highest.

2. Be prepared ahead of time.

Before you schedule your appointment, let your hair grow for 2-3 weeks (about a quarter of an inch). Give your bikini line a gentle exfoliation the day before and follow up with baby oil to soften the hair follicles.  Don’t use numbing creams, as they don’t penetrate deep enough to help.

3. Be prepared the day of the appointment.

On the day of your wax, wear comfortable underwear and loose clothing to avoid any irritation.

4. Get conversational with your esthetician.

We are here to help you! Let your esthetician know about any medications you’re taking before you get started.

5. Relax!

Some of the pain that is associated with waxing comes from tension, so focus on your breathing and find your happy place. The relaxing environment at Cielo Spa Boutique helps with the relaxation process.

6. Take care of yourself afterwards.

Voila! You did it.  If you feel any irritation, apply a soothing aloe vera gel. Wait 24 – 48 hours to do anything that might irritate the area, like tanning or exfoliating. A bit of redness is normal for a few hours after.

7. Rinse, repeat!

Your first wax removes the majority of hair that has grown above the skin. The next wax will get the hairs that were still growing beneath the surface of the skin. After 3 – 4 waxes, your hair will be growing on the same cycle, resulting in longer lasting smooth skin! Moisturize between cycles to prevent brittle hair from breaking off.

Now that you know what to expect, book your first appointment with our waxing specialists today!
